apibrėžtis Senovės graikų iškilmės ir sporto varžybos dievo Dzeuso garbei. Olimpijos žaidynių atsiradimas siejamas su legendomis apie graikų mitinius didvyrius Pelopsą ir Heraklį. Aiškinama, kad Pelopsas įvedė keturkinkių vežimų lenktynes, o Heraklis – bėgimo ir kitas sporto varžybas. Olimpijos žaidynės vykdavo kas 4 metai Olimpijoje. Pagal tradiciją Olimpijos žaidynių pradžia laikomi 776 m. pr. Kr., kai buvo imta rašyti nugalėtojus ir numeruoti olimpiadas. Per Olimpijos žaidynes Graikijoje vyraudavo taika. Olimpijos žaidynės trukdavo 5 dienas: pirmąją ir penktąją dienomis vykdavo iškilmingos ceremonijos, aukojimai, kitomis – vyrų ir berniukų sporto varžybos (iki 472 m. pr. Kr. jos trukdavo 1 dieną). Iš pradžių Olimpijos žaidynių programoje būdavo tik 1 stadijo (192,27 m) bėgimas, vėliau – ir 2, galiausiai – dar ir 8–24 stadijų bėgimas, pentatlonas. Nuo 444 m. pr. Kr. į Olimpijos žaidynių programą įėjo meno konkursai. Juose dalyvaudavo įžymiausi senovės Graikijos kultūros šviesuoliai Herodotas, Sokratas, Demostenas, Pitagoras. Olimpiečiai prieš žaidynes bent 10 mėn. treniruodavosi ir dar 1–2 mėn. rengdavosi pačioje Olimpijoje, prižiūrimi jiems paskirtų Dzeuso šventyklos žynių. Stadione tilpdavo 50 tūkst. žiūrovų. Žaidynėms vadovaudavo teisėjai (helanodikai), išrinkti prieš metus. Nugalėtojus (olimpionikus) apdovanodavo alyvmedžio šakelių vainiku. Iš viso surengta 293 Olimpijos žaidynės. 394 m. Romos imperatorius Teodosijus I panaikino Olimpijos žaidynes.
